Known for its Greek Revival homes and Manhattan’s largest concentration of Federal-style row houses, the Charlton-King-Vandam Historic District was carved from the grounds of the Richmond Hill estate, built in 1767 and known for years as one of the most beautiful mansions in the city. After serving as George Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War and the official mansion for Vice President John Adams, the property was purchased by Aaron Burr, who divided the acreage into lots and laid out the grid of its streets at the end of the 18th century.
